Jakarta, April 13, 2015 – UCWeb (“the company”), the global leading provider of mobile internet software and services, announced today that its flagship UC Browser has risen to the top in Indonesian market, according to StatCounter, representing another big step forward for the company’s commitment to helping more people around the world enjoy a convenient and unfettered mobile Internet. UC Browser recorded 28.51% market share in March 2015 to become the most popular mobile browser in Indonesia, the world’s fourth populous country, according to analytics service StatCounter.

The launch of UC Browser for Android in Indonesian language in 2012 was a momentous start of UCWeb’s journey in the country. Ever since, the browser’s popularity in the country has been growing steadily. Over the past year, UC Browser is one of the only two browsers in the country that has seen growth, as per StatCounter. In addition to its market leading position, the browser also continuously ranks as the second most downloaded app at Google Play Indonesia. Today, Android users account for over 85% of UC Browser’s user base in Indonesia.

Talking about the browser’s future development in the market, Jonathan Zhong, head of UCWeb Indonesia, said: “We are looking to increase our local headcounts to cope with the fast-paced growth. The localization of our team will be an important agenda in our plan. Apart from that, we are also looking for more local service and content providers to work with so we can foster an ecosystem that benefits everyone - more choices for our users and more mobile traffic for our partners.”

Riding on the smartphone tide

The increasing popularity of UC Browser in Indonesia attributes to its efforts in in-depth localization that caters to underserved user demands, technologies that speed up web browsing as well as the upsurge of the smartphone. Firstly, data compression and cloud acceleration, two technologies UC Browser is well versed, are fully adapted here in Indonesia. They not only save data consumption and make mobile browsing more affordable, but also significantly speed up web page loading under various networks. For instance, leveraging dedicated servers, cloud acceleration and even a special plugin for quicker Facebook access, Indonesian UC Browsers are able to browse Facebook in a faster manner. Other than this, UC Browser teams up with Facebook to make real-time notification of Facebook updates available for the first time outside of the native Facebook app. UC Browser’s proprietary browsing technology and localization efforts give its users an unprecedented way to stay connected with their friends and what matters to them on the mobile Internet.

User-friendly UI and easy-to-access content make internet easy to navigate.

The past few years have seen fast-lane growth in smartphone shipments in Indonesia. IDC, a market researcher, expects the shipments to grow 20 percent this year. Riding on the smartphone shift, UC Browser crafted a flurry of handy features, such as Smart Downloader, Video Player and Gesture Support, to fully exploit the versatility of smartphone, making mobile browsing easier and smarter for its users.

Additionally, UC Browser offers a series of content and services meticulously selected to meet local users’ demands. For instance, football is the most popular sport in Indonesia, and UC Browser provides UC Bola, a one-stop football content platform where users can stay tuned to live scores, text broadcast, stats, photos, videos, etc. Moreover, UC Bola features a unique Comments feature, allowing football fans across the country to interact with each other instantly while browsing the football news. “It’s Indonesians’ zeal for football that inspired and led us to this little sweet feature,” said Mr. Zhong.
